70 years of Music: Félix Ibarrondo and his Music for Saxophone (2014).
Documentary directed by Alex Gomis and produced by SIGMA Project, with funding from the Basque Government Department of Culture.

The documentary 70 años de Música: Félix Ibarrondo y su Música para Saxofón (40 minutes) was recorded between 2013 and 2014, to celebrate Félix Ibarrondo’s 70th birthday.

Ibarrondo’s close ties with the SIGMA Project quartet go back to the very beginnings of the quartet (2008), who in their presentation concert in Madrid (Auditorio 400 del Museo Reina Sofía, 27/10/2008) presented the first performance in Spain of “AKAITZ”, a work for 12 saxophones that the Basque composer wrote in 1994.

It was from that date onwards that Ibarrondo, whose musical catalogue did not include music for saxophone, began to investigate the universe of sound of this instrument, always with the help of the members of the SIGMA Project.

This led to important works dedicated to the saxophone and included in Ibarrondo’s musical catalogue, such as:

  • AIKAN (2011) for saxophone quartet (see video).
  • HANGOAK (2012) for tenor saxophone solo (link) (video)
  • IZARBIL (2013) for saxophone quartet and Symphony Orchestra (listen to audio)
