If in Chanson (the other part of the diptych) the piece that articulates the work was the polyphonic song by Clément Janequin “Toutes les nuits”, in the second one, Frottola, it’s a Bartolomeo Tromboncino’s frottola (a form of multi-voice song predecessor of the madrigals) called “Non val acqua al mio gran fuoco”. The main section (Poco mosso) flows freely and undulating, as inage of water, alternating in contrast with another section (Più mosso) more angular and wild, as image of fire. Tromboncino’s original music appears briefly and subtly quoted in the quieter moments.
