Nothing is better than leaving the composers, directors and musicologists themselves to be the ones who draw a small sketch of the SIGMA PROJECT.

Polyphonic division and fusioning sounds are both so thrilling playgrounds when the four saxophones of the internationally leading saxophone quartet SIGMA PROJECT take care of music that knows about the especially high variability of these instruments. When I first heard SIGMA’s interpretation of Alberto Posadas’ milestone cycle “Poética del Labyinto” I had to look twice into the CD’s booklet and the score: impossible all these new sounds could happen without any help of live-electronics! Their latest CD sounds simply amazing in every manner! In this PROJECT the “sum” (Sigma) is more than it’s elements. So cool!.

Listening to SIGMA Project’s new CD has been a great pleasure. I hear a wonderful sound, a richness in timbre ranging from the general sound to the smallest detail; from the softest delicacy to the biggest sound roughness. Music is entirely articulated from a deep comprehension of the instrument and its sound possibilities. SIGMA Project shows this whole range of possibilities with a strength and physical presence that is seldom exhibited by a saxophone quartet. Bravi tutti!!

José María Sánchez-Verdú is one of the greatest figures of the new Spanish and European music. His work, moving and full of wisdoms, talent and personality, is embedded in the most subtle and obscure of Mediterranean culture. He has premiered, in absolute terms, the full version of Khôra. It is a monumental cycle for saxophone quartet and microtonal accordion that is almost seventy minutes long and has Platonic resonances.

What took place in the capital of Extremadura on Saturday was a first-rate musical and life experience; Sánchez-Verdú is a master of an unmistakable language. His refinement, appreciation for nuance and detail, mastery of a craft that he believes artisanal – his handwritten scores are, besides music, visual poems – and sensibility, which is willing to mold and enjoy itself within its emotional horizons, are the pillars that support, frame and nourish this new height of his substantial and selected catalogue.

The cycle’s etymological origin is not trivial – it was Plato who coined the term “khôra”. Sánchez-Verdú explains that this concept “places us in the spatial field”. Nor it is accidental that, with the aim of materializing the specific sonorities demanded by the creator’s imagination … he creates what he has called the “Egyptian saxophone” – the result of adding a bassoon’s crook and a Baroque bassoon’s reed to the tenor saxophones. Their final appearance suggests, nevertheless, the snake goddesses of Crete, Minoan inhabitants of the blue and inspirational Mediterranean dormant in the sheer universe of the composer from Algeciras.

Sánchez-Verdú dodges the temptation of the bright and sensationalist saxophone to investigate and achieve sonorities, effects, levels, registers, harmonies, suggestions and polychromies that are specific of said clear, crystalline, ancient and new language. They are now engraved in a homogeneous mosaic of scriptures “that occupy ambiguous and transitional spaces, like containers of an ungraspable thought, of a universe of reflection and questioning”, to use the author’s own terms.

Rather than premiering Khôra, SIGMA Project’s four members became an inseparable part of the work of which they are receivers themselves. Certainly, it is impossible to invoke a more involved interpretation – neither musically nor scenically, emotionally nor physically. More than a quartet, Sigma is a single instrument, a single sense. Barefoot, feeling the connection to the earth and the vibrations of a sound that spread in the ideal museum space; dressed in pristine white and next to the prepared accordion (with microintervals in its system of reeds) played by the colossal Iñaki Alberdi. Not even such virtuosity and cluster of virtues were able to dominate over the subjugating communicative and sensory strength possessed by the new masterpiece in the hands of its master performers.

With Poética del Laberinto, SIGMA Project offers an exemplary CD in every aspect. The musically ambitious piece that mixes profane and sacred mysteries at once is a monument TO music for saxophone and not FOR saxophone.

SIGMA Project is formidable. It is an incredible testimony to the saxophone’s new era in the written music field.

Is it really necessary to introduce SIGMA Project in 2020? The vast quantity of concerts the group has performed during its ten-year trajectory, mainly in Europe and Latin America, the number of works commissioned during that time period, and its participation in thirteen albums ratify its remarkable role as one of the busiest Spanish groups and as an ambassador of newly created music.

SIGMA PROJECT: an optimistic saxophone quartet that “works al pil-pil”

… since they first set foot on the stage of the Kursaal Auditorium in San Sebastian, the 27th of August of 2008, their activity has been frantic. The repertoire they have provided to the instrument’s history would have been unimaginable some decades ago. The hiatus caused by the health crisis has engulfed these musicians in a landslide of “different feelings”.

SIGMA Project has therefore faced these difficulties with its best resources: innovation, which drives it to never stop planning for the future, excitement and joy brought by recently being able to return to on-site rehearsals as well as the stage, fortune felt by its musicians for being part of this project and a combative spirit to strengthen “the unity and defense of the cultural sector”. Thus, with a renewed spirit, the quartet has been able to recover some of the performances that had been left pending.

Last 12th of September it made its debut at the Mixtur Festival in Barcelona. The program deployed by the saxophonists is a good example: the absolute premiere of Homeless Carrera by the French Raphaël Cendo, funded by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, Sigma Waves by Hèctor Parra, Milk Spilt on a Stone by Helga Arias, and three miniatures by fledging composers from China, Turkey and Germany, who had participated in the composition workshop.

SIGMA Project still has many limits to cross and surprises to offer. Therefore, it is keeping up its efforts, “which has become complicated nowadays, but not entirely difficult”.

Musikaste Festival. Tribute to Luís de Pablo. SOUND AND VISUAL POETRY.

It was an encounter with poetry, sensibility and good taste. Yesterday, the performance designed by the saxophone quartet SIGMA Project, with the music by the Basque composer Luís de Pablo as the protagonist, gave away expressivity. To this effect, the evening it presented did justice to its multidisciplinary spirit as it did not only include music, but also an impeccable scenography by Javier Larreina. SIGMA Project’s sound blending was stunning. The director Iker Sánchez Silva achieved the no simple matter of blending rhythm and timbre in an equally hypnotic and poetic interpretation, rounding out a stirring tribute.

We invited SIGMA Project to Mixtur Festival 2020 and it was an unforgettable experience.

They presented an extensive program that included four premieres, and, through the great energy, versatility and creativity of their performance, they allowed us to relive the magic of live music and to experience the value of keep on moving in a time marked by the pandemic.
A big thank you to SIGMA Project for this gift!

The fact that Irvine Arditti himself was dazzled by the discovery of this work at a concert, the Poética del Laberinto cycle by Alberto Posadas (1967), and, at the same time, of their interpreters to whom it was dedicated to, the saxophone ensemble Sigma Project, should anticipate a clearly scrumptious listen. In this Posadian Poetic and in the Khôra cycle, by José María Sánchez-Verdú, the Sigmas possess two formidable masterpieces born out of their spur. The record has an outstanding acoustic magnitude and it is able to place us at the heart of this saturated and Escher-like building at the mercy of the dedicated Sigmas, real “Ardittis” of the saxophone.

Poética del Laberinto, E-rated record
The exceptional record rating (E) is granted to a novelty of great artistic interest and of absolute reference.

The music of Poética del Laberinto is vastly subtle and has intricate details. Sigma Project’s four instrumentalists perform its countless effects with outstanding faithfulness.
